Two leased zones for wind energy development.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) held its auction last week for two leases zoned for offshore wind energy in the Carolina Long Bay area. This is the second of such auctions to take place this year. The first was a record-setting auction of wind energy zones in the New York Bight that took place in February.
The two leases cover 110,091 acres and have the potential to generate 1.5 gigawatts of offshore wind energy if fully developed, enough to power half a million homes. Sixteen bidders participated in the auction, including large global energy companies such as BP and Shell. At the end of the day, TotalEnergies from France and U.S. power company Duke Energy Corp won one lot each, with Duke paying $155 million and TotalEnergies paying $160 million.
